Meet Grace Mwangi
Background:
Grace Mwangi is a 13-year-old girl living in a small village in central Kenya. She dreams of becoming a nurse so she can help care for the people in her community. However, like many girls in her village, Grace faced the challenge of period poverty, which threatened her ability to stay in school and pursue her goals.
The Challenge:
Before receiving support, Grace had to stay home during her menstruation because her family couldn’t afford sanitary products. She would miss up to five days of school each month, falling behind in her lessons and struggling to catch up with her peers. This led to frustration and a fear that she might never achieve her dreams.
The Change:
Grace’s life changed when she became part of our program. She started receiving a monthly supply of sanitary pads, which allowed her to manage her periods confidently. Grace also attended workshops on menstrual hygiene, which gave her valuable knowledge about her body and health.
The Impact:
- Full School Attendance: Grace no longer has to miss school during her period. She attends classes regularly and can keep up with her studies.
- Improved Academic Results: With consistent attendance, Grace’s grades have improved, and she feels more capable in subjects she once struggled with.
- Boost in Self-Esteem: The availability of sanitary products has not only helped Grace academically but also emotionally. She feels more confident and empowered, ready to face her future challenges.
Looking Ahead:
Grace is now more determined than ever to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. With your support, girls like Grace are able to stay in school and work towards a brighter future, free from the barriers of period poverty.
